Keywords: Climate Change Manufacturing industry

NEC Corp. (NEC) and NEC Biglobe Ltd. (BIGLOBE), an Internet service provider, announced on April 1, 2009, their plan to jointly provide a service for making carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions visible. The service is called the "Carbon Diet Program for All," and it aims to encourage households use less electric power. A test service started on April 1, with about 100 households chosen from among NEC group employees.

The "Carbon Diet Program for All" service was developed by BIGLOBE. The easy-to-install device measures electricity consumption and automatically sends the data to the server for data calculation via short-distance radio transmission. The service doesn't require users to perform any complicated procedures, and allows them to easily check on the Internet their progress in reducing emissions of CO2.. The service offers some unique ideas for users to enjoy and continue the electricity-saving and the CO2 reduction activities, such as giving eco-points equivalent to the reduction amount and holding competitions among users.

The test service is scheduled for three months, starting from April 1, 2009, involving 100 employees from NEC group companies as monitors. Using the results of the test run, NEC, BIGLOBE and EX Corp, which is will supervise the project, will examine the solutions for environment-conscious municipalities including environmental model cities as well as private companies, and they expect to achieve the sales of 2 billion yen (US$20.4 million) during the upcoming three years.
