Japanese Travel Bureau Launches 'CO2 Emissions-Free' Tour Product

Keywords: Climate Change Non-manufacturing industry

JTB Kanto Corp., located in the Tokyo area, launched an innovative new brand of eco-tour it calls Greenshoes, on April 12, 2007. The first product on the market is the "CO2 Emissions-Free Tour," which focuses on group tours for corporations and schools.

The concept is to offset CO2 emitted from transportation during the tour by using a system of green energy certificates. The aim is to enable tourists to help create a sustainable society while enjoying travel.

Another feature is that the product was created and is operated through collaboration among four companies. JTB Kanto sells the No-CO2 Emissions Tours product. Subsequently Sony Music Communications Inc. procures green energy certificates, and the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies calculates the amount of green energy needed to offset CO2 emitted during the trip. The cost of green energy certificates paid by tour participants and passed through Sony Music Communications is used by Green Energy.Com to develop eco-friendly electricity generation which ultimately offsets the CO2 emitted.

JTB Kanto aims to have 10,000 customers a year choose this product.
