Japanese NGO Combating Global Warming

Keywords: Climate Change NGO / Citizen

The Kiko (Climate) Network is a Japanese environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) that is making proposals and taking action to halt global warming through the activities of ordinary citizens. It was founded in April 1998, taking over the mission and activities of the Kiko Forum, which was formed by Japanese NGOs and worked for the success of the 3rd Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP3) in 1997.

The Kiko Network has been working through wide-ranging activities. Its members take part in international negotiations over global warming prevention, make policy proposals, conduct research and studies, send information through newsletters, emails, facsimiles and websites, organize seminars and symposia, implement environmental education programs, and support local activities against global warming.

Every year the NGO organizes a symposium titled "Prevention of Climate Change Led by Citizens" in Kyoto to commemorate COP3 hosted by the ancient capital of Japan. Many citizens from across Japan take part in symposia to share the latest information on international negotiations, domestic systems and specific measures, as well as to discuss and study strategies to combat global warming. Meanwhile, the "Natural Energy School in Kyoto," a participatory hands-on seminar that the Kiko Network runs in partnership with other organizations to develop human resources and networks, has been expanded by participants to other regions in Japan, contributing greatly to the nationwide promotion of renewable energies.
