Tokyo to Join Large Cities Climate Leadership Group

Keywords: Climate Change Local government

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) announced on December 1, 2006, that it has decided to participate in the Large Cities Climate Leadership Group. The group is an association of large cities working together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and was founded following a proposal by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of London.

As a member of the group, the TMG hopes to learn about various efforts and measures from other member cities, and to provide information and proposals based on Tokyo's advanced technologies and measures to combat climate change.

Prior to this decision, the Governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, and the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, signed a Partnership Agreement on May 31, 2006, establishing a formal working level relationship between Tokyo and London for the purpose of jointly tackling common challenges to both cities.
