World Mayors Council on Climate Change to be Held at Kyoto

Keywords: Climate Change Local government

Kyoto City announced on November 8, 2006, that it would hold the World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC) at the Kyoto International Conference Hall from February 16th to 18th, 2007. Participants will be municipalities, businesses and citizens from Japan and abroad, who are addressing global warming at the local level. They will discuss measures to prevent global warming and the challenges to be faced, while strengthening international cooperation to promote global warming countermeasures at the global level.

The WMCCC is a network organization of municipal leaders from around the world, established specifically to address global warming. Having been initiated by Mayor Yorikane Masumoto of Kyoto City, the WMCCC now has member mayors from 15 cities and districts in 11 countries, including Germany, Canada, the Philippines and the US. The conference in Kyoto will be the second, following the conference held in December 2005 in Montreal, Canada. At the Kyoto conference, member municipalities will present and discuss measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Taking this opportunity, Kyoto City will mount a campaign for global warming prevention during the month when the conference is held. Seven organizations, including Kyoto City and Prefecture, will work together to encourage citizens and businesses to implement global warming countermeasures. Citizens and businesses who would like to join the campaign will choose measures from three categories (Household, Company and Eco-Drive), and declare their intent to implement these measures through the Internet or fax.
