Keywords: Climate Change Local government

The 21st Mayor's Conference of Nagoya & Neighboring Municipalities was held at the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan on August 11, 2006 to discuss regional governmental issues. The mayors of Nagoya and neighboring municipalities (21 cities, 12 towns and one village) participated.

The theme of the meeting was how to develop a unique community based upon the outcomes of the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi. Case studies were presented by Seto City and Nagakute Town (the two expo sites), which neighbor Nagoya and Toyota.

From the viewpoint of inheriting ideas from the expo, the mayors exchanged opinions on the efforts of each municipality to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. A joint appeal proposed by Nagoya City was adopted at the meeting for initiatives to curb global warming through enhanced cooperation.
