Telephone Hotline for Complaints about Overcooled Facilities

Keywords: Climate Change Local government

Shizuoka Center for Climate Change Action offered a seasonal telephone hotline from June 24 to August 31, 2006 for complaints about overcooled public transportation facilities, stores and offices. On behalf of the citizens who called in, the center reported the content of the complaints to the facility managers and encouraged them to improve their air-conditioning management. Detailed information about how to improve air-conditioning management is also offered on its website.

Japan's Environment Ministry's nationwide "Cool Biz" campaign has encouraged moderate air-conditioning temperatures by promoting lighter clothes in summer since fiscal 2005. However, many people often feel that air-conditioning temperatures are still set too low for them to wear lighter clothes. According to the center, this telephone service was set up to support the Cool Biz campaign and to help promote energy conservation.

As of August 17, 2006, a total of 93 complaints against supermarkets, trains or public facilities were received. The center notified the managers of these facilities about the complaints; some of these responded positively, saying they would take appropriate measures.
