Toray Accelerates its GHG Emission Reduction Program

Toray Industries Inc. has achieved its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission target - a reduction of 6 percent from FY 1990 levels by FY2008 - three years ahead of schedule, the company said on December 22, 2005. Toray's GHG emissions in FY 2005 in terms of CO2 emissions were 6.9 percent lower than FY 1990 levels.

This achievement was made possible by the introduction of equipment capable of greatly reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions at the company's Tokai plant. This equipment uses a thermal process to almost completely break down N2O into nitrogen and oxygen. N2O is present in off-gas emitted in the production of caprolactam, a raw material for nylon 6.

Toray started fully operating this equipment in December 2005 after confirming through tests that it could decompose 99 percent or more of the N2O gas. This enabled the company to reduce 180,000 tons of GHGs in terms of CO2 a year, a 7 percent reduction from FY2004 levels.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Toray has decided to raise its CO2 emissions reduction target in FY 2008 to 10 percent from FY1990 levels. The company aims to promote further reductions and contribute to combating global warming.
