Toshiba - Steadily Striving For a 25% Annual CO2 Emissions Reduction by FY2010

Keywords: Climate Change Manufacturing industry

Japan's Toshiba Group has been carrying out various projects aimed at achieving a 25 percent reduction ratio of energy-originated carbon dioxide (CO2) emission per nominal production volume by FY2010, as compared to FY1990. The group aims to reduce annual CO2 emissions by about 500,000 tons, equivalent to 25 percent of its estimated emissions in FY2010. This target has been stipulated in the global warming section of their fourth voluntary environmental plan, published in March 2005.

Among the companies in the group, the majority of CO2 emissions result from production of semiconductors and liquid-crystal devices. As this field is expected to expand and emissions to continue rising, the group is promoting energy-saving projects in their 'clean-room' facilities, where semiconductors are manufactured and particularly large energy expenditure is required.

For example, introduction of the latest technologies in a new 'clean room' that produces 300mm wafer semiconductors in a plant in Yokkaichi, Mie Pref, achieved a 51 percent reduction in annual energy use, equivalent to 51,980 tons of CO2 emissions compared to emissions resulting from the facility's previous manufacture of 200mm wafers.

In addition to energy saving 'clean room' project, management improvement and investment in energy-saving equipment are effectively interrelated and being globally implemented, contributing to the progress of projects for emissions reduction in general business sectors including research institutions and offices.
