MLIT Sets Global Warming Guidelines for Gov't Buildings

Keywords: Climate Change Government

The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) formulated guidelines for its workers on office use to curb global warming on April 5, 2005. The guidelines aim to promote climate-friendly use of all government offices, which is specified as a way to reduce greenhouse gases in Japan's national program, the Kyoto Protocol Target Achievement Plan.

The guidelines include a check sheet to confirm the effects of daily energy-saving measures done by users and maintenance personnel of government buildings, and to monitor the implementation of the measures. By answering the questionnaire consisting of 33 items, respondents can score their energy conservation practices. The guidelines also show the estimated amount of CO2 emissions reduced, and energy and costs that can be saved by implementing all the measures.

MLIT has provided the guidelines to other government ministries and agencies, while also posting them on its website. The ministry plans to provide detailed feedback based on the collected data.
