Kanagawa to Launch Web-Based Green Education Support System

Keywords: Local government Policy / Systems

Kanagawa Prefecture announced on January 28, 2005, that it will launch the Green Education Support System (tentative name) in fiscal 2006, aiming to support environmental education at schools.

The prefecture announced a plan called "New Agenda 21 Kanagawa" in October 2003, aiming to create a sustainable society. Under the plan, citizens, businesses, non-profit organizations and local authorities register their voluntary activities on environmental conservation and report on a website operated by the prefecture.

The Green Education Support System supports environmental education and conservation activities in local elementary and junior high schools that are registered under the program. School children will have the opportunity to learn about green purchasing and eco-labelling (including Japan's Eco Mark) and receive lessons on the environment with the assistance of environmental non-profit organizations.

To fund the project, the prefecture plans to use advertising revenues from its website, titled "The Environment in Kanagawa," which carries advertisements by businesses engaged in environmental activities.
