Iwate Prefecture Starts Eco-Friendly Office Certification

Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan launched a new scheme in January 2005 to certify offices actively working to protect the environment as "Eco-Friendly Offices in Iwate."

The scheme aims to expand commitments to tackle global warning by certifying offices actively involved in measures to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and by introducing their efforts to citizens through the prefecture's website and publications.

The certificates are issued in four categories, ranging from one to four stars. For example, one-star certificates are given to offices with full-time staff who attend an "Eco-Staff Training Course" (a two-day seminar on measures to reduce CO2 emissions), and four-star certificates are given to offices with the concrete results from activities to reduce CO2 emissions.

During the three years from the day the certificates are issued, certified offices are allowed to display the certification logo on their business cards and printed materials.
