NEC's CO2 Reduction Project Wins Cannes Cyber Lions Grand Prix

An online interactive environmental project by NEC Corp., named "ecotonoha" and run from July to December 2003 on the company's website, won the Cyber Lions Grand Prix Award at the 51st Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival (June 20-26, 2004).

NEC's project is part of a corporate advertising campaign run in conjunction with its environmental activities. Visitors to this website added a personal "ecotonoha" leaf by clicking on the tree and writing a message, to "grow" virtual trees. For every 100 messages, NEC announced that it would plant one extra tree as part of its afforestation activities. The name "ecotonoha" was coined by combining the words "ecology" and "kotonoha," which means "word" in ancient Japanese.

About 60,000 messages were sent to the website from around the world during the project in fiscal 2003. Aiming to reduce CO2 emissions, NEC is contributing to afforestation activities on Kangaroo Island in Australia. NEC has planted an additional 609 trees there as a result of this project.
