Green Management Certification System Launched in Japan's Trucking Industry

Keywords: Climate Change Government Non-manufacturing industry Policy / Systems Transportation / Mobility

Japan's Foundation for Promoting Personal Mobility and Ecological Transportation (EcoMo Foundation) started implementing its Green Management Certification System October 2003.

The EcoMo foundation created this system to encourage truck operators to reduce their impact on the environment. Trucking companies that meet the requirements prescribed in the foundation's Green Management Manual will be certified and registered after passing an assessment.

This certification system was established in cooperation with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Japan Trucking Association, with grants from the Nippon Foundation. The EcoMo Foundation serves as the certifying body.

The certification is valid for two years. Companies must submit annual reports of their activities for periodical follow-up assessments, and they can maintain their status by passing a renewal assessment every two years. The cost is 155,000 yen (about U.S.$1,400) for each business site to register, including the on-site assessment, a registration certificate, registration for two years, and guidance and information services (excluding transportation costs for assessors).
