On July 11, 2003, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) obtained ISO 14001 certification for its secretariat division, which promotes the Olympic Movement and supports athletes. This certification is unique among athletic groups, and is the first among all 202 National Olympic Committee (NOC) members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The JOC organized its environmental framework in October 2002, and has been making positive efforts in their management activities. The JOC set up a Sports and Environment Committee and has been publicizing issues about Sports and Environment on its website. The organization intends to continue to promote environmental conservation activities in the sporting world, in accordance with the basic environmental principles they have adopted.
