Suruga Bank Ltd., a Japanese regional bank with 122 branch offices, mainly in Shizuoka Prefecture, started new Internet banking services on January 31, 2003 to raise funds for the "Mt. Fuji Network," a group working to preserve environments surrounding Mt. Fuji, the highest peak in the country.

Through this activity, the bank, which acquired ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system, hopes to enhance its eco-related services and to make contributions to society. Customers using the bank's Internet-banking services can remit their donations to the Mt. Fuji Network from their registered accounts free of charge, a saving of 105 to 315 yen (about 87 U.S. cents to U.S.$2.60).

Mt. Fuji Network was founded in October 1999 to raise awareness of the Mt. Fuji Charter, formulated by Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures, on whose borders Mt. Fuji stands. Its members include nature conservation groups, nonprofit organizations (NPOs), businesses, the media companies and local governments. The Suruga Bank is a regular member of the network.
