Companies Boost Environmental Activities

Japan's Ministry of the Environment has announced the results of its "Survey of Companies for Environmentally Friendly Activities" for FY 2001. This survey has been conducted every year since 1991. Questionnaires were mailed to 2,644 listed companies and 3,716 unlisted companies with 500 or more employees. Valid responses were received from 48.8% of the listed companies and from 43.2% of the unlisted companies.

As of December 2001, the percentage of companies in the survey that had had obtained ISO14001 certification was 59.2% for the listed companies, an increase of 9.3 points from the previous year, and 40.8% for the unlisted companies, a rise of 10.3 points. In all, 20% of the companies issued environmental reports, a 4.0 point increase, and 16.9% of the companies introduced environmental accounting, an increase of 3.7 points from the previous year.
The percentage of companies that took some actions to combat global warming reached 62.6%.
