The rock ptarmigan, one of the Japan's protected species, can only live in alpine regions where the average yearly temperature is around two to three degrees Celsius. Over-exploitation and destruction of natural habitats have already reduced their inhabitable area. If global warming continues to raise the average temperature by one or two degrees, their habitat is predicted to shrink further to only half of the present area.
