Nippon Paper Industries Co. announced on August 22, 2011, that it would accept wooden rubble from the Great East Japan Earthquake for use as fuel at its Ishinomaki Factory in Miyagi Prefecture. Despite the factory being damaged by the tsunami, continuous operation of biomass boiler No. 1 and full-scale power generation at the adjacent N1 turbine were successfully resumed. In light of this success, the company decided to accommodate a request by the Governor of Miyagi Prefecture to take in rubble.

As boiler No. 1 uses wood waste as fuel, the company and the prefecture agreed to use rubble from the Ishinomaki area including Ishinomaki City, Higashi Matsushima City and Onagawa-cho. The rubble will be crushed and then used as fuel. The company will tentatively receive the rubble at Ishinomaki Factory, and upon accepting a formal contract with Miyagi Prefecture, the company will use about 120,000 tons of rubble as fuel annually.

Meanwhile, Ishinomaki Factory will supply about 40,000 kilowatts of electricity generated at the factory, enough to power about 100,000 average households, to Tohoku Electricity Company, starting from August 21, 2011.

As disposal of rubble is becoming a major issue for full-scale recovery of the areas damaged by the tsunami, it is hoped that the company's initiative will contribute to local restoration.
