Waste Canning Syrup Utilized as Swine Feed

SEW Daisaikai Farm, a pig farming company in Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture, located in the northwestern part of Kyushu, Japan, announced on December 22, 2010, the utilization of canning syrup as swine feed using biomass technology. This is one of the environmentally friendly initiatives involving agriculture, commerce and manufacturing being undertaken in the prefecture.

One of the partners, the Nagasaki Agricultural and Forestry Technical Development Center, proposed the "liquid feeding system," which dispenses liquid feed containing high moisture contents to pigs using pipelines. The center studied mixed liquid feed comprising syrup and other ingredients, and confirmed that it was palatable for pigs and effective for somatic growth.

The other partner is Tarami Corp., a fruit jelly manufacturer. In the process of manufacturing, about 4000 tons of syrup in fruit cans is drained off annually. This wasted syrup is edible and has a high sugar content (about 16 percent). However, as it is discharged in large volumes, it is difficult to recycle. In cooperation with SEW Daisaikai Farm, the only pig farming company in the prefecture with a liquid feeding system, Tarami is promoting the utilization of 3000 tons of syrup annually for feed.

The use of waste syrup as swine feed is expected to bring about positive effects, reducing costs by 26 million yen (U.S.$321,000), including 12 million yen (U.S.$148,000) in disposal fees and 14 million yen (U.S.$173,000) in feed. This joint initiative is regarded as one of the best applications of the resource recycling model.
