During the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum meetings held in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, from November 7 to 14, 2010, food pictograms were used in the explanation of meals served at Yokohama Royal Park Hotel and five other hotels in Yokohama, reception parties by the Cabinet of Japan, and networking events for business leaders. The meetings had over 8,000 visitors from all over the world. The pictograms, representing beef, egg, milk, alcohol, and other foods, were created by Ohkawa Printing Co. in collaboration with non-profit organization Internashokunal, companies in the city, and the city government.

The purpose in using the pictograms was to create a food environment in which guests and those who were involved in the meetings could comfortably enjoy meals regardless of their nationality, culture, or religion.

For the future, the concerned parties aim to expand the use of pictograms to major hotels, food manufacturers, restaurants, and pharmaceutical companies at home and abroad. Their goal is to have all people--even those who have allergies to certain foods, or those who cannot eat a certain food for their religious reasons--enjoy meals without any concerns when eating out or travelling abroad. They plan to establish a private-sector-led Council for the Promotion of Food Pictograms (tentative name) in April 2011 to further promote the joint development and implementation of food pictograms.
