Toray Industries Inc., a major Japanese manufacturer of fibers, textiles and chemicals, announced on September 29, 2010, that its group companies increased sales of environmentally-friendly products by 6 percent from the previous year to 288.9 billion yen (U.S.$3.5 billion), recording an all time high in such sales. An environmentally-friendly product is defined as a product that contributes to or plays an important role in one of the following categories during its lifecycle: energy conservation, alternative energy, biomass, water treatment, clean air, environmental impact reduction, and recycling.

The product categories that saw increased sales in fiscal 2009 were energy conservation products, such as lightweight engineering plastics and high-functional fibers and textiles, and alternative energy products, such as materials for solar battery back-sheet and equipment for lithium-ion battery production.

In its business policy released in 2008, Toray declared that it would base the principle of every business strategy on global environment conservation to contribute to creation of a sustainable low-carbon society. The company has been promoting Life Cycle Management (LCM) adopting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods as a first-mover among the major chemical companies in Japan.

Since FY2004 when the counting started, sales of environmentally-friendly products have been increasing with their ratio to total sales rising from 10 percent in FY2004 to 21 percent in FY2009. The company aims to increase the sales to 370 billion yen (U.S.$4.5 billion) in FY2010, a 28 percent increase from the previous year.
