Supermarket chain Shizutetsu Store, which carries out its business at 33 stores mainly in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, earned Chain of Custody (CoC) Certification by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) on March 17, 2010.

The MSC is an independent international nonprofit organization that works on conservation of marine resources and the environment through its certification programs for sustainable and well-managed fisheries and the CoC certification.

Shizutetsu is the second Japanese retailer to receive the CoC certificate. Having received the CoC certificate by MSC, the company can now process and sell sustainable MSC certificated fishery products at its stores.

The retailer sells Skipjack tuna products by Tosakatsuo Suisan Group's pole and line Skipjack tuna fishing that received MSC certification in November 2009, such as Skipjack tuna lightly roasted with straw, and sliced Skipjack tuna lightly roasted with straw for sashimi.

The retailer is also making efforts to raise customers' awareness about the importance of sustainable fishing by promoting eco-friendly fishing practices and products in its stores' seafood sections, using marketing materials.
