Seven-Eleven Launches New Box Lunch to Promote Food Education

In response to Wakayama prefecture's campaign on food education during the month of October, 2007, Seven-Eleven Japan Co., a major convenience store chain in Japan, developed a new box lunch in accordance with the prefecture's guidelines, which it made available at 38 outlets in Wakayama Prefecture starting on October 16; it also conducted a food-education campaign until the end of the month.

This campaign aimed to encourage people to eat breakfast regularly by displaying information about the nutritional balance of meals on store shelves. Japan's Basic Law on Food and Nutrition Education defines food education as fundamental to life, embodies basic concepts that address intellectual, moral and physical education, and aims to educate people so they can practice healthy dietary habits by acquiring knowledge about food and the ability to make appropriate food choices through various types of experiences.

Back in March 2004, Seven Eleven and the prefectural government concluded a cooperative agreement on regional projects to improve public services and promote the development of industries. Under this agreement, the company has been working together with the prefecture by taking measures to deal with potential earthquake disasters in the region and by conducting a stamp rally aimed at cleaning up street litter. Seven Eleven will continue its cooperation with Wakayama Prefecture and develop safe and healthy products made from locally-produced foodstuffs.
