NEC Begins Sales of Refurbished PCs with One-Year Warranty

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

On February 28, 2007, Japan's NEC Corporation and NEC Personal Products, Ltd., started to sell refurbished personal computers (PC) with a one-year warranty. NEC has been marketing its refurbished PCs with a six-month warranty since July 2003. NEC is the first manufacturer in the industry to provide a one-year warranty for refurbished PCs.

A one-year warranty comes with recycled PCs purchased from customers within one year of their release. NEC buys back used PCs, and selects those that run properly and have a relatively clean appearance. Then, upon completion of refurbishment, NEC sells the recycled PCs that have both a one-year warranty and a support service similar to that for its brand-new PCs.

NEC intends to extend the life cycles of its products by buying back used PCs and recycling them. By reducing environmental impacts, they are committed to the promotion of a recycling-oriented society.
