NEC Launches Service to Buyback, Refurbish and Resell Used PCs

Japan's NEC Corporation and NEC Personal Products, Ltd. started on July 22, 2003, to purchase NEC-brand used personal computers (PCs) and to resell them after refurbishment. This is the first buyback service by a PC manufacturer for personal users that does not require them to purchase new computers.

NEC purchases used PCs that were placed on the market since January 2000. The company accepts users' applications for this service at an Internet Web site for NEC personal products (http://121ware.com/support).

After buying back the used PCs, the company erases data from the hard disks, cleans the exterior, reinstalls operating systems and runs operational tests. An "NEC Refreshed PC" sticker is attached to the computers, which are then sold over the counter with a six-month warranty.

The company expects that this used-PC buyback service will complete their integrated user support system, which ranges from pre-purchase services to the disposal of used PCs and will reduce the environmental burden by reducing the amount of waste disposed, as a result of extending the life of computers.
