Taisei Corp. Designs Practical Sunlighting System Using Mirrors

Taisei Corp., a major Japanese construction company, has jointly developed a sunlighting system, dubbed T-Soleil, with AQUSYS Corp., a Japanese precision instrument maker, it was announced on March 7, 2006. Adopting a new method using mirrors, the system allows abundant sunlight to be taken into a building, providing a comfortable level of lighting.

The system uses several mirrors. The primary mirror has an automatic sun-tracking function, and catches large amounts of sunlight, while the second and third mirrors diffuse the sunlight within the building. The multiple mirror allocation allows sunlight to be efficiently reflected in all directions.

Using this system, brightness can be tripled when compared with typical top lighting systems, and light reaches all rooms year round. Test results have confirmed that the system can reduce electricity consumption for lighting by 20-30 percent, while the glare-reducing material and configuration of the mirrors aim to achieve a high-quality lighting environment and to preserve eye health.

There has been increasing calls for buildings to offer improved amenities and more open communications. Taisei aims to create "warmer" spaces by using abundant sunlight to meet these demands. The company hopes to actively promote the system for both new and existing buildings.
