Miyagi Prefecture Hires 'Coordinators' to Promote Industrial Waste Recycling

Keywords: Local government Non-manufacturing industry Policy / Systems Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Miyagi Prefecture in northern Japan stepped up its efforts to reduce and recycle waste from business facilities in the prefecture by creating positions for "Environment Industry Coordinators" at the start of fiscal 2004. They visit companies to conduct surveys, collect information, and give advice and guidance on waste management. The prefecture publicly invited experts with experience in technological development, distribution management, and waste treatment in private companies or universities to apply for the positions. Five experts were selected from 45 applicants.

The coordinators will visit facilities that generate or recycle waste and ask about efforts being made and problems being faced relating to industrial waste management and initiatives to reduce environmental impact. The information collected will be reflected in prefectural policies, while know-how acquired for reducing waste and for recycling will be shared with industry. The coordinators will also act as go-betweens for companies or between companies and research institutions to support their technology development.

Through this system, the prefecture hopes not only to reduce industrial waste but also to foster environmental businesses.
