Japan's Matsushita Group, consisting of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and its affiliates, has achieved a 98-percent recycling rate at its 111 plants, three quarters of the group's 147 domestic operation sites. The group had achieved a group-wide average recycling rate of 98.2 percent by the end of March 2003. It also attained a near-zero waste target set in August 2000 that aimed to reduce the total amounts of industrial and general waste incinerated or disposed in landfills from manufacturing facilities, to as close as possible to zero, and to achieve a recycling rate over 98 percent by March 2003.

Industrial waste and salvageable by-products were reduced by 26 percent in volume and 14 percent per unit of sales. In April 2003, Matsushita also started using an electronic manifest system for industrial waste, using a global positioning system (GPS) and graphic data to track shipments, in an effort to strengthen its risk management of industrial waste.

The group will continue to improve its recycling rate at home and abroad, according to its Green Plan 2010, an action plan compiled in October 2001.
