Keywords: Manufacturing industry Policy / Systems Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Seiko Epson Corporation announced that it has achieved zero waste emissions by recycling 100% of wastes generated from business activities at 28 domestic locations, including all of its own and its associated businesses' sites, and also at 10 production plants overseas. This is the achievement of the company`s stated goal of "Level 1 Zero Emissions by the end of March 2003."

By developing contacts with companies specializing in recycling, Seiko Epson succeeded in establishing waste disposal routes that effectively utilize all wastes. For instance, sludge, which was formerly buried in landfills, is made into a component of cement, waste oil and waste plastic into recycled/substitute fuel, paper into cardboard, and kitchen refuse from the employee cafeteria into compost. All other wastes, such as waste alkali, waste acid, metal and glass are also recycled.

As part of its Level 2 "Zero Emissions" activity, the company is making efforts to reduce the creation of waste in the first place. For that purpose, they are working towards limiting the total emissions of wastes and recycled materials from its domestic sites to 14,000 tons, equal to 1997 levels, by the end of fiscal 2003.

The company aims to achieve Level 1 at all production plants overseas within fiscal 2003.
