Recycling of Household Appliances Exceeds 10 Million in FY2002

Japan's Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry have announced that the total number of four kinds of used household appliances collected for recycling at designated collection sites increased by 19 percent from the previous year to 10.15 million units in fiscal 2002. The recycling of television sets, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners is stipulated in the "Law for Recycling of Specified Kinds of Home Appliances," which entered into force in April 2001.

Forty household appliance recycling plants are now in service nationwide, and the "recycling tag system" is also said to be functioning well. This system enables consumers to trace the handling of their discarded appliances on the web site of the Association for Electric Home Appliances.

Both ministries are fairly satisfied with implementation of the law, on aspects such as proper disposal of used appliances by consumers, collection from consumers by retailers, collection at designated sites by manufacturers, and the recycling of reusable appliances at recycling facilities. They concluded that the law was being properly implemented in its second year.
