Kitaro, a Japanese artist and composer famous for performing music with a synthesizer, held a concert in Beijing to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. Dubbed the Kitaro Silk Road Concert, it was the first "carbon neutral" concert ever held in China.

"Carbon neutral" is a measure to balance the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and absorptions from the global point of view. The U.K. company Future Forests Ltd. scientifically assessed the emissions of CO2 that would be emitted by the concert, based on data such as the weight of equipment, size of audiences and transportation. To compensate for the emissions, trees will be planted to absorb an equivalent amount of CO2.

This emissions attributable to the concert were estimated at approximately 127 tonnes. More than 170 trees will be planted in the "Kitaro Forest" at a site managed by Future Forests to offset those emissions. After this concert, Kitaro's agent, Cocoronetworks Inc., plans to expand "Kitaro Forests" by promoting his future concerts and CDs as being carbon neutral.
