The convenience store chain am/pm Japan Co. differentiates itself from competitors by emphasizing "peace of mind" as an advertising message. The branded frozen box lunch is typical of the company's approach to marketing. This boxed meal is frozen quickly in the factory, delivered to each store and then refrigerated. When a customer orders the box lunch, it is heated up in a microwave oven just before being served. The company advertises that this product can be enjoyed with peace of mind because it is preservative-free.

The frozen box lunch also minimizes environmental impacts related to waste and distribution logistics. Convenience stores usually dispose of food that has passed its expiry date, but the use of frozen meals reduces the need to dispose of unsold food. Introduction of this food service has resulted in an 80-percent reduction in food waste. The company claims that it has also reduced exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. Since frozen food can be stored longer than non-frozen food, deliveries are more efficient because they can be larger and less frequent.
