Nissan Aims for 95% Recyclability Ratio

Keywords: Environmental Technology Manufacturing industry Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Nissan Motor Co. of Japan is aiming to achieve a high recyclable rate for its mini hatch-back March model, ahead of the schedule set by a European Union directive to car manufacturers. This directive requires manufacturers of new vehicles sold in the EU market to achieve a total recyclable rate of 95 percent (including reuse of materials, and thermal recovery from incineration) as one of requirements for vehicle registration starting in 2005.

To achieve a recyclable rate of 95 percent, Nissan is adopting the use of more polypropylene (PP), regarded to be more recyclable than other plastic materials. It is also increasing the weight ratio of PP among all plastics used in vehicles from 42 percent in old models to 57 percent. With door trims, Nissan introduced designs that use only PP, instead of combining wood, leather, and steel as in old models. For the instrument panel, the use of only two components made solely of PP rather than various parts made of PP-compounds simplifies the process of dismantling and sorting, cutting 80 percent of the time consumed in dismantling.
