Denso Co., a major Japanese supplier of automobile components, announced on April 24, 2012, that it has successfully developed a car air conditioning system that divides the space within a vehicle into three areas, the driver's seat, passenger seat and rear seats, and is able to control the temperature of each area separately. For instance, if only the driver is in the vehicle, the system only heats or cools the driver's seat, thus conserving energy. This system that can control the temperature of driver's seat only is the first of its kind.

The new air conditioning system features a unit divided into five sections, each of which sends air directly to its corresponding outlet in the car. This structure enables the air supply to areas with no passengers to be stopped with the press of a button, as well as the setting of different temperatures for each area when sending air to multiple areas, thereby reducing power consumption and ensuring good climate control to maintain comfort levels, even in very warm or cold weather.

The new system has been installed in several models of the new Lexus GS series, and can reduce power consumption by about 20 percent a year on average, as compared with conventional car air conditioning systems, if air is supplied to only the driver's seat.
