Japanese Agricultural Company Achieves GLOBALG.A.P. Certification of Barley Leaves

Keywords: Ecosystems / Biodiversity Food Manufacturing industry

Toyo Green Farm Inc., a Japanese agricultural company, announced on January 31, 2012, that it has gained certification under the Global Good Agricultural Practice (GLOBALG.A.P.) Version 4.0 standard for young barley leaves that it grows at the farm it manages directly. This is the first certification for young barley leaves in Japan since the GLOBALG.A.P. Version 4.0 standard was upgraded.

GLOBALG.A.P. is an international standard that assures the safety and environment-friendly management of agricultural products in production. Underlying the EUREPG.A.P. standard, which was developed by the Euro-Retailer Produce Working Group (EUREP) in Europe, are the fundamental principles of food safety, environmental preservation, and the health, safety and well-being of workers, as well as the welfare of wild animals and livestock.

Efforts to obtain the GLOBALG.A.P. certification have increased in China and Southeast Asia, partly because it is a requirement for all agricultural exports to Europe.

Toyo Green Farm, which grows young barley leaves, kale, and Suiou plants (leaves and stems of sweet potato) -- the ingredients for Aojiru green juice -- in the Aso region, Kumamoto Prefecture, was also granted certification under the Japanese Agricultural Standards for Organic Agricultural Products (JAS-Organic) system in July 2006.
