Raul Co., a Japanese company providing Green Site Licenses for environmental certification of natural energy, announced on February 1, 2012, that it had started an afforestation project where one can contribute to tree planting in a Mongolian desert by clicking "Like" buttons on Facebook. One tree will be planted for every 10 "Likes."

Trees, such as poplar and elm, will be planted in Mongolia's Selenge Province. The province has lost 32,000 ha, about 70% of its forest area to large fires. As forest comprises less than 10% of its land area, Mongolia has less forest area than the global average of 30%, and its deforestation is severe.

It is generally agreed that 150-200 kilograms of CO2 is absorbed over 10 years by planting one broad leaf tree. Other positive aspects of afforestation include the maintenance of biodiversity, purification of water and buffering against strong winds.
