Gardening Operator, NPO Team up to Launch Donation/Gardening Program

A vegetable gardening program called "Farm for Two" was launched on January 17, 2011, by Table for Two (TFT), a Japanese non-profit organization focused on addressing food problems, and Toho-Leo Co., an operator of the urban vegetable garden rental program "Machinaka Saien," Japan's first donation-based gardening program. The aim of the program is to install vegetable gardens at schools in impoverished areas in South Africa in an effort to eradicate malnutrition among children.

The program raises additional money through contributions from the garden users (called "members"). The members who support the proposal are requested to donate 300 yen (about U.S.$3.70) per month along with the membership fee for garden use. Those contributors are sent a report of the conditions of the school gardens and of the children's lives in the participating African countries.

The first place to receive assistance is an elementary school in an impoverished area of northeast Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition to installing vegetable gardens adjacent to the school, workshops will be held to support the independence of students there. A local non-governmental organization affiliated with TFT will be responsible for the garden installation and workshop facilitation. The program, which will use the harvested vegetables for school lunches, is targeted to launch around November 2011.
