Fujitsu Ltd., a major Japanese electronics manufacturer, released on August 19, 2010, the Fujitsu Group Biodiversity Action Principles, which outline the quantitative evaluation of the impacts on and contribution to biodiversity through business activities. Using the guidelines, the company aims to reduce its biodiversity impacts by 3 percent from fiscal 2009 levels by the end of fiscal 2012 through its Fujitsu Group Environmental Protection Program.

The goal of the integrated guidelines is a step-by-step reduction of biodiversity impacts by setting quantitative targets, including a comprehensive evaluation of the entire company's activities, encompassing business impacts, space and land utilization, and environmental protection actions; a link with conventional environmental assessment systems; and determination of this company's own weighting in terms of both the impacts on and status of biodiversity.

By focusing on the lifecycles of products and business activities, space and land utilization/contribution to the environment, and social contributions, the quantitative evaluation identifies factors that impact biodiversity. In addition, it evaluates biodiversity loss caused by business activities, the value of ecosystems around business, and the natural ecosystem to be conserved.

At the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10), which will be held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, in October 2010, post-2010 goals and the importance of private sector participation and quantitative target settings will be discussed, as biodiversity conservation is considered an urgent global issue.
