Toshiba Starts '1.5 Million Tree Planting' Initiative

Keywords: Ecosystems / Biodiversity Manufacturing industry

Japan's Toshiba Corporation has started an initiative to plant 1.5 million trees by 2025, which marks the company's 150th anniversary, as a pillar of its corporate philanthropy. Toshiba plans to afforest or maintain a total of 1.5 million trees in domestic and overseas areas from fiscal 2006.

The company will select regions all over the world where afforestation or forestry maintenance are required, with particular focus on Japan, China and other Asian countries. Volunteers, mostly employees of Toshiba group companies, plant trees and maintain forests through cooperative activities with local administrations and non-profit organizations. In addition to employee initiatives, the company plans to fund non-profit organizations for afforestation.

In Japan, the company has been helping to nurture national forests by opening the Toshiba Forest in Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture, in July 2005, as well as supporting the revitalization of 'Satoyama' forest in Tatsuno City of Hyogo Prefecture. Overseas activities include cooperation to the forestation project in Chongqing City of China and mangrove planting by the Thai Toshiba Group.

These initiatives are the outcome of Toshiba Group's global theme for social contributions generated through these activities. Taking full account of the biodiversity in forests, the company aims to contribute to conservation of the global environment as well as improving its employees' social contribution and awareness of global environmental issues.
