Japan's Oji Paper Co. announced on January 11, 2006, that 10 Japanese companies have joined its tree planting project in Laos, which was started to secure paper materials.

Through the tree planting project, Oji Paper aims to realize environmental harmony, to participate in socially beneficial activities, and to coexist with the international community. The company called on its business partners who place emphasis on social and environmental contributions to join the afforestation project in Laos, and 10 companies agreed to participate.

The project started on February 28, 2005, after the business was assigned to the company. As part of the project, Oji Lao Plantation Holdings Ltd., a joint holding company of Oji Paper and 10 Japanese firms, and the Laotian government jointly set up Oji Lao Plantation Forest Co. The joint venture will secure 50,000 hectares for tree planting activities for the next 50 years, and will plant eucalyptus trees on about 7,000 hectares annually for seven years. This will eventually supply about 450,000 bone dry tons of woodchip per year.

Oji Paper considers this sustainable forest management and afforestation project to be part of its social and environmental contributions to sustainable development in Laos. The company also intends to implement initiatives to improve quality of life in the local community by both creating employment and strengthening the foundations of the community itself.
