Eco-friendly copy paper made from woodchips coming from a forest certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has been on the market since mid December 2005. Biznet Corp., a Tokyo-based business process outsourcing company specializing in office equipment and supplies, released its "NEO" brand of paper products to establish a value chain for providing FSC-certified paper in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corp. Biznet's 2006 catalogue, issued on December 1, 2005, was also printed on the FSC-certified paper.

NEO paper is produced at the Hachinohe Paper Mill belonging to Mitsubishi Paper Mills Ltd., another Mitsubishi group company. Mitsubishi delivers woodchips to the factory from a jointly owned plantation in Chile that obtained FSC certification in October 2002. Mitsubishi Paper Mills then produces paper based on the quantity of certified woodchips supplied. Initially, consumption of certified woodchips is estimated to amount to about 3,000 tons a year, the single largest production of FSC-certified paper in Japan.

In October 2005, environment-friendly virgin pulp made of FSC-certified wood was added to the list of preferred pulp materials in the revised guidelines of the Green Purchasing Network, a nationwide network of companies, local governments and consumer groups. Encouraged by this move, Biznet intends to actively promote the FSC-certified copy paper through its business services.

The FSC-certified paper is made from a combination of wood originated from FSC-certified forests and non-certified wood which comes from legitimate and traceable sources. FSC certification is granted to a forest that is properly managed to preserve forest ecosystems and landscapes while also providing economic benefits to the local community.
