Patagonia Japan Sells T-Shirts to Support Environmental NGOs

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry

The outdoor clothing maker Patagonia Japan launched the sale of fund-raising T-shirts in December 2005 to support grass-roots groups working on environmental issues all over Japan. This follows their sales of a "Time's Up" T-shirt in 2004. (Refer to the related JFS article #1054).

The new T-shirt's theme is "Activist Athletes," and the focus is on river issues in particular. Their design highlights taking an active role in protecting the rich natural environments where outdoor athletes enjoy their sports.

The long-sleeved T-shirts are made of 100% organic cotton and are priced at 5,040 yen (about $U.S. 45) including tax. The company will contribute 500 yen (about $U.S. 4.40) per shirt to the following groups: the Nature Conservation Association of Hokkaido (Hokkaido); the Sanru River Protection Team (Hokkaido); the Association of Concerned Citizens for the Yamba Dam Project (Gunma Prefecture); and the Struggle Committee against Tokuyama Dam (Gifu Prefecture).
