900 Vessels Adopt Improved Screw Propeller Developed by Mitsui O.S.K.

Keywords: Chemicals Energy Conservation Environmental Technology Manufacturing industry Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

The high energy efficiency of Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF), a screw propeller developed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, has resulted in its adoption by 900 vessels worldwide, as of January 2005.

The development and practical application of the PBCF has taken advantage of the energy lost by a propeller hub vortex. It enhances propeller efficiency by four to five percent, saving fuel consumption and reducing emissions of hazardous gases such as CO2, NOx and SOx from vessels by five percent, while boosting speed by one to two percent.

This propeller has won awards from the Japan Institution of Marine Engineering and the Society of Naval Architects of Japan, as well as an award given to superior energy-saving machinery from the Japan Machinery Federation, enjoying a high reputation both home and abroad.
