NEC to Plant Trees as Part of Computer Recycling Program

NEC Corp. and NEC Personal Products, Ltd. launched the NEC's Refreshed PC Afforestation Project on April 1, 2005, in conjunction with their ongoing NEC's Refresh PC Project, through which they purchase used NEC personal computers and refurbish them for sale as recycled PCs.

Through the new project, NEC will plant one tree for each PC purchased from users who participate in the project. NEC does not charge the user any cost for the planting. They will plant eucalyptus or acacia trees on Kangaroo Island, SA, Australia, in August every year.

NEC calculates that the trees planted will absorb about 20 kilograms of CO2 per PC each year, for a total of 400 kilograms for each computer over 20 years (the average growing time for these species). Refurbishing a recycled PC also means about 100 kilograms less in CO2 emissions compared to manufacturing a new PC, so each computer purchased under this program can save a total of 500 kilograms of CO2.

NEC expects to buy back 20,000 to 30,000 used PCs in fiscal 2005, which will represent a CO2 emissions reduction of a total of about 10,000 to 15,000 tons.
