ESCO Targets Supermarket Energy Consumption in Japan

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Energy Conservation Non-manufacturing industry

The First Energy Service Co.(FESCO) announced on December 9, 2004 that it will start an ESCO project named "Super Marugoto" to provide food supermarkets with business strategies to guarantee high energy efficiency without requiring any initial investment. ESCO is short for "energy service company," an innovative business that provides comprehensive energy conservation services to customers.

Taking advantage of its experiences in ESCO projects, FESCO plans to develop the project to improve energy efficiency at existing stores of the food supermarket industry, which have not yet made substantial efforts to save energy. The company will make proposals such as the introduction of more energy efficient equipment and efforts to reduce unnecessary electricity consumption during the hours the stores are closed.

FESCO plans to introduce the project to 1,000 stores within three years. In the future, the company aims to provide comprehensive energy services, which will include supplying clean and inexpensive electricity from wood biomass power plants built and operated by the company.
