The Japanese Ministry of the Environment announced the results of its "Survey on Eco-Friendly Corporate Activities" on September 22, 2004. The survey has been conducted annually since fiscal 1991 to learn about corporate environmental activities. Questionnaires were sent to 6,354 stock exchange listed and unlisted companies, and the ministry tallied the results of 2,795 valid responses.

Sixty-six percent of the respondents had concrete targets on the environment, up 3.3 points from the previous fiscal year, while 65.7 percent had concrete plans on environmental activities, up 5 percentage points.

Concerning information disclosure, 39.7 percent of the companies said they provide environmental information to the public, a gain of 3.8 percentage points. While 743 companies issued environmental reports in fiscal 2003, another 238 answered that they planned to issue them in fiscal 2005.

The survey showed that more and more companies are dealing with eco-related businesses and promoting global warming countermeasures. It also showed that 65.5 percent of the companies regard it necessary to implement some form of environmental rating system in order for society to evaluate corporate environmental activities.
