Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) recently made its first announcement to recognize excellence in stores promoting energy-efficient products, based on the Energy-Saving Products Retailer Evaluation Program, which was launched in 2003. Forty stores were given that distinction this year.

The aim of this program, which evaluates retail outlets' efforts to provide information on energy-saving products to consumers, is to spread the benefits of energy-efficient products among consumers. The agency invited large electronics stores to join the program, and received a total of 510 applications. The special assessment committee gave high marks to Bic Camera Co. and Yodobashi Camera Co., major electronics retailers in Japan.

Stores recognized for excellence receive a certificate and plaque. A logo was also created for this program so that customers can easily identify which stores have been rated as excellent. These stores can use the logo on their advertising flyers and displays. The program started taking applications for the 2004 selection process on May 31, 2004.
