On March 23, 2004, Nippon Paper Industries Co. started manufacturing the first forest product to be certified in Japan by the Sustainable Green Ecosystem Council (SGEC).

Aiming to improve the quality of forest management in Japan and to provide a reliable link between producers and consumers of forest products, SGEC set up two certification systems: a "Forest Certification System" to accredit sustainable forest management and a "Separation and Labeling System" to control all processes from manufacturing to distribution. Forest products that satisfy the standards of the two systems are qualified to use the SGEC logo.

The first SGEC-certified product is a pallet that has a plate-like base for transporting paper, such as copying paper. Nippon Paper Industries intends to pursue sustainable business practices in harmony with nature by obtaining the SGEC's certification for all the company-owned forests in Japan and abroad by 2008. Furthermore, the company is developing a new type of house to be certified by SGEC during 2004, jointly with Kikuchi Kensetsu Co., a construction company known for its traditional Japanese timber-framing.
