The First Energy Service Co. (FESCO), an energy service company (ESCO) in Japan, has joined up with Sowa Engineering Co., a wastewater treatment engineering company, to enter into the business of treating organic wastewater from industrial and commercial facilities. This is a new business model combining the energy-service know-how accumulated by the ESCO pioneer, FESCO, with Sowa's wastewater treatment technology. The companies will receive their first order soon.

Organic wastewater discharged from factories or kitchens of business facilities contains high levels of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), suspended solids (SSs) and normal hexane (n-Hex or animal/vegetable fat and oil). Discharged wastewater is strictly regulated under standards in Japan's Sewage Water Law and Bylaws, Water Pollution Control Law, and other laws. Facilities discharging more than 50 tons of wastewater per day are required to install primary treatment devices for wastewater.

The new wastewater treatment system uses aerobiotic microorganisms, and provides benefits such as significant reductions in sludge volume and running costs, compliance with standards for discharged wastewater and removal of foul odors. The two companies also expect that savings from cost reductions will more than offset the service fees to be paid by customers.

FESCO aims at achieving a target of one billion yen (US $9.6 million) in annual sales within three years by providing this wastewater treatment service to factories and kitchens of business facilities, while carrying on with its core ESCO services.
